The Importance of Metal Fabrication

There are a lot of areas in our lives that metal fabrication plays an important role, as much as we may not immediately recognize it. If you see metal parts in use; there was most likely metal fabrication done to achieve those shapes and designs. Metal fabrication entails the bending, cutting, and assembling of various metal parts and pieces into specific structures. This shall be work assigned to skilled technicians.

There are basic steps involved in the metal fabrication process. The process normally involves the cutting of metal using manual or mechanized techniques like sawing, shearing, and chiseling. Technology has advanced to allow the application of modern methods such as laser cutting, water jets or torches. These are all computer controlled methods that achieve higher accuracy levels. These shall also involve the use of sheets of metal. This is why the process is called sheet metal fabrication.

There shall then be the bending of the metal into whatever shape is necessary. This is done using the press brakes or by hammering. You may find the process to be manual or automated. The press brakes make it possible to clamp the sheet metals via punches and dies. There shall then be the measuring of the produced pieces before them being joined. The joining can be done via welding, fastening, riveting or binding. These are that make up the entire metal fabrication process.

There is also the stamping process, which is another metal fabrication process. It is the best when you need a large number of the same part. It shall involve the creation of a mold or stamp. The mold or stamp shall then be pressed upon sheets of metal by use of a stamping machine to give out the needed copies. This is how you end up with accurate copies of the needed items. There is a lot of time, money and technical expertise needed when creating the mold in the beginning. It is after this has been made that you shall find the process to now be affordable and less strenuous. This process is what is commonly used to make things like vents, panels, hinges, and such items.

There is always a preference for steel in the making of such metal items through fabrication. Some of those processes shall incorporate the use of carbon as an alloying element. It is the cheaper of the two metals but brings some desirable traits, such as increased strength, malleability, and hardness. These qualities shall depend on how much carbon you see in the metal object. The only issue with carbon is its ability to erode. This can be dealt with when the metal item is coated or painted. There is also the use of stainless steel as another solution.
